You know the drill.

You open Instagram, and within three minutes you’ve looked at six artists in your medium, four musicians in your genre, two filmmakers who got into the festival you didn’t, and a photographer whose client list makes you want to close your laptop and never pitch again.

You tell yourself it’s research. You tell yourself you’re staying current. You tell yourself you need to know what’s working.

But what actually happens is this: you start making work that looks like theirs. You start posting the way they post. You start writing your bio the way they wrote theirs. You start pricing the way you think they price. You start pitching the galleries they pitch, using language that sounds like their language.

And slowly — without realizing it — you disappear.

Not because you stopped creating. But because you stopped being you.

The trap is the same across every discipline.

If you’re a visual artist, you scroll other artists’ feeds and start second-guessing your palette, your scale, your subject matter. You see someone land a gallery show and you start reverse-engineering their aesthetic instead of pushing deeper into your own. You write an artist statement that sounds like theirs because theirs seemed to work. Six months later, a curator scrolls your page and sees... nothing memorable. Because you look like everyone else who was also copying that same artist.

If you’re a musician, you study the artists who got the Spotify editorial placement or the sync deal. You start tweaking your sound to fit what seems to be landing — slightly more ambient, a little more lo-fi, whatever the algorithm is rewarding this month. You write a press kit that sounds like every other indie artist’s press kit because you modeled it off theirs. A music supervisor listens to your track and skips it in three seconds. Not because it’s bad. Because it sounds like everything else in their inbox.

If you’re a filmmaker, you watch the shorts that got into Sundance and start framing your next project around what worked for them — the pacing, the tone, the subject matter. You write a director’s statement that echoes theirs. You build your deck around their visual language. A programmer reads your submission and it feels... familiar. Not in a good way. In a “I’ve seen this before” way.

If you’re a photographer, you scroll through the feeds of the photographers getting the gallery shows and the festival selections. You start adjusting your work — same muted tones, same large-format compositions, same conceptual framing that feels vaguely like theirs. You submit to the same open call with a project statement that could have been written by any of the twenty photographers they reviewed that day. A curator flips through your portfolio and moves on. Not because the work is weak. Because it doesn’t feel like it belongs to anyone in particular.

The pattern is identical no matter what you make. You optimize around your peers. And whatever group you optimize around is the group you start to look like.

Here’s what nobody tells you.

The people who are actually booking the work — getting the gallery shows, landing the sync placements, winning the festival slots, signing the commercial clients — they aren’t looking at their competitors’ Instagram feeds for direction.

They’re looking at the people who buy.

The gallerist. The curator. The music supervisor. The art director. The festival programmer. The collector. The brand manager. The publisher.

These are the people whose attention actually matters. And what they respond to is fundamentally different from what impresses your peers.

Your peers are impressed by aesthetic. The buyer is impressed by clarity. Clarity about what you do, who it’s for, why it matters, and what makes it different from the other 200 submissions in their inbox this month.

A gallerist doesn’t pick the artist with the best Instagram grid. They’re looking for the work that stops them — something they haven’t seen before, something that makes them feel like they discovered it first. Every gallerist wants to be the one who found the next Basquiat, the next Kara Walker, the next Wolfgang Tillmans. They want a voice that’s unmistakably its own. And when a pitch email lands in their inbox and tells them, clearly and confidently, why this work exists and why it belongs in their program — that’s what gets a reply. Not a beautiful grid. A clear voice.

A music supervisor doesn’t pick the track that sounds most like what’s trending. They’re trying to solve a problem — a specific scene needs a specific feeling, and they’re scrolling through hundreds of submissions looking for the one that gives them chills. The artist who sounds like a slightly different version of what’s already charting gets skipped. The one with a sound they can’t quite place? That’s the one they send to the director.

A festival programmer doesn’t pick the short film that looks like last year’s Palme d’Or winner. They’ve watched 3,000 submissions. They’re tired. They’re looking for the filmmaker who made them forget they were watching a screener — the one with a perspective so specific it couldn’t have come from anyone else. The films that feel like they were made to fit a festival’s taste get rejected. The ones that feel like they had to be made get programmed.

A publisher doesn’t pick the manuscript that reads like a polished version of what’s already on the shelf. They’re looking for the writer whose voice they can hear after one page — the one who makes them think, “I haven’t read anything like this.” The proposal that mirrors the bestseller list gets a pass. The one that carves out its own space gets a meeting.

The pattern is the same everywhere. The people making decisions aren’t looking for the next version of what already exists. They’re looking for something they haven’t seen yet. And you’ll never become that by studying what everyone else is doing.

The practical shift.

This isn’t about ignoring your industry entirely. It’s about changing where you get your direction from.

Instead of scrolling other artists’ feeds and asking “what are they doing that I should be doing?”, try asking a different set of questions:

What does the person on the other side of my pitch actually need to see? A gallerist needs to know your work fits their program. A music supervisor needs to hear a track that solves a specific brief. A brand needs to see that your photography matches their visual identity. An editor needs to know your manuscript fills a gap in their list. Start there — not with what other creatives are posting.

What does a great submission in my field actually look like? Not from the creator’s perspective — from the reviewer’s. Talk to a gallerist about what makes them stop scrolling. Ask a music supervisor what makes a pitch stand out. Read interviews with festival programmers about what they look for. The answers will surprise you, because they’re almost never about the work itself. They’re about the communication around the work.

What am I doing that nobody else in my space is doing? This is your actual advantage, and you’ll never find it by looking at competitors. You find it by looking inward — at your background, your perspective, your combination of influences, your specific way of seeing. The musician who used to be an architect. The painter who spent a decade in finance. The filmmaker who grew up on a cattle ranch. Those aren’t quirks to hide. They’re the things that make your work — and your pitch — unforgettable.

The hardest part.

The hardest part of this isn’t the strategy. It’s the discipline.

Because scrolling your peers feels productive. It feels like you’re learning. It feels like due diligence.

But it’s actually procrastination dressed up as research. And it’s slowly making you less distinctive, less confident, and less likely to make the work that only you can make.

The next time you open Instagram and start drifting toward the feeds of people who do what you do, close the app. Open your email instead. Send one pitch. Write one statement. Follow up with one contact.

That’s the work that actually moves your career forward. Not watching someone else move theirs.

Share The Intentional Artist

Most of them are good artists. A lot of them are making strong work. But most of the emails get closed in under ten seconds — not because the art isn’t good enough, but because the email itself doesn’t give me a reason to keep reading.

I want to show you what I mean. Below are screenshots of real artist submissions pulled directly from my gallery inbox. I’ve redacted the artists’ names, email addresses, gallery references, and details about their work to protect their privacy — but nothing else has been changed. These are real emails from real artists. Then I’ll show you the one I actually replied to, and why.

Email A:

Three sentences, and not one of them tells me anything about the fit. “I found your gallery very interesting” — which part? The program? A recent show? The roster? And pointing me to Instagram instead of a curated portfolio means I’m now doing the artist’s homework for them. I closed this in about four seconds.

Email B:

No subject line. Two sentences. Ten unsolicited image attachments. “I am waiting to hear from you” after giving me nothing to respond to. This is the email equivalent of dropping a stack of canvases on someone’s desk and walking out.

Email C:

This went on for three more paragraphs. It reads like a graduate thesis abstract, not an email to a human being. Beautiful writing, probably — but I’m a gallerist with forty unread messages, not a panel reviewer. There was no mention of my gallery anywhere in it. Not once. So this artist clearly doesn’t know anythign about the gallery.

Now compare those with Email D:

That’s it. That’s the one I replied to.

Why? Because this artist did four things none of the others did: referenced a specific interaction (the booth visit), showed awareness of my time (waited until after the fair), gave me real context about where they are in their career (represented, selling, expanding), and closed with confidence instead of desperation. “If not, I’ll keep going” is the best close I’ve seen in an artist email in a long time.

The one thing that would have made this even better? Finding my name.

“Hello Fabrik Projects” is already miles ahead of “Dear Gallery” — but “Hi Chris” would have made it feel like a conversation instead of a pitch. That takes about thirty seconds on most gallery websites. It’s a small thing, but small things are the whole game here.

These are the pattern I’ve watched play out for fifteen years running Fabrik Projects in Los Angeles. Hundreds of submissions a year, and the gap between the artists who get replies and the ones who don’t almost always comes down to three things happening in the first few sentences:

• Specificity over formality. The artists who get replies reference a recent show, name an artist on the roster, or mention a piece of writing from the gallery’s own site. It signals that this isn’t a mass email, and gallerists can smell a mass email from the subject line.

• A point of connection, not a list of credentials. Your MFA, your residency, your exhibition history — those matter, but they belong further down the email or in your CV attachment. The opening needs to answer one question: why this gallery? If your first sentence could be copy-pasted to fifty other galleries without changing a word, it’s not doing its job.

• Permission, not pressure. “I’d love to share a few images if you’re open to it” is a completely different energy than “I am sending you images of my paintings and I am waiting to hear from you.” One respects my time. The other assigns me homework.

That’s the whole game. Not talent. Not connections. Not luck. Just the craft of writing an email that signals — in the first three seconds — that you understand the person reading it.

Most artists never learn this because nobody teaches it. Art school covers critique, theory, history, technique — but not the ten-minute writing task that determines whether your work ever gets seen outside your studio.

I’ve watched too many good artists sit on strong work for years because they couldn’t get past the blank email draft. They’d open a compose window, stare at it, write three sentences, delete them, and convince themselves the work wasn’t ready yet.

The work was ready. The email wasn’t.

You're playing a game you didn’t design, by rules you never questioned.

Go to college. Get the degree. Climb the ladder. Work for 40 years. Retire if you’re lucky. We accept these rules as universal truth, but they’re just one version of the game - designed by institutions that benefit from your compliance. What if you could write your own rules? What if success didn’t have to look like everyone else’s? The game you’re playing might be rigged against the life you actually want to live.

• The system rewards conformity, not creativity.

• You can play by the rules or you can make your own. But you can’t do both.

You can't fix what you won't acknowledge.

We’re masters at lying to ourselves. We call procrastination “waiting for the right time.” We call fear “being realistic.” We call avoidance “not being ready yet.” These gentle lies protect us from discomfort, but they also keep us stuck. The stories you tell yourself about why you can’t, why it won’t work, why now isn’t the time - they’re more limiting than any external obstacle. Brutal honesty with yourself is the beginning of real change.

• The truth you’re avoiding is the door to your freedom.

• Every excuse is a story you’re choosing to believe.

Time is the currency of life. How you spend it is how you spend your life.

We claim we value creativity, but spend hours consuming content. We say relationships matter, but invest our best energy into work. We talk about health, but trade sleep for one more episode. Your time is the most honest audit of your priorities. Not your intentions, not your wishes, not what you tell yourself you care about. Where your hours actually go - that's what you value. And unlike money, you can never earn more time.

• You always have time for what truly matters to you. Always.

• Saying you don’t have time is just saying it’s not a priority.

The crowd moves together because no one wants to stand alone.

When everyone around you validates your choices, agrees with your opinions, and follows the same path, it feels safe. But safety and growth rarely coexist. The ideas that change things, the work that matters, the life that’s truly yours - they don’t come from following the herd. They come from being willing to think differently, even when it’s uncomfortable. Especially when it’s uncomfortable. The crowd offers comfort. Independent thinking offers freedom.

• Popular opinion is often just shared blindness.

• The path everyone’s taking leads to where everyone already is.

The gap between your words and your actions is where self-deception lives. You say family matters most, but work always comes first. You say health is a priority, but you never make time for it. You say you want to create, but you scroll instead. Close the gap, and you’ll find your integrity.

Comfort is seductive. It’s also where dreams go to die.

There’s nothing wrong with comfort itself - rest is essential, ease is beautiful. But when comfort becomes your default setting, when you organize your entire life around avoiding discomfort, you stop growing. Every skill you admire in others was built through discomfort. Every version of yourself you want to become requires leaving behind the version you are now. The edge of your comfort zone is exactly where your transformation begins.

• Discomfort is temporary. Regret is permanent.

• The most alive you’ve ever felt was probably when you were least comfortable.

We’re brilliant at explaining why we can’t. Not enough time. Not enough money. Not enough experience. Too old. Too young. Too busy. Too tired. And maybe some of those things are true. But the story you keep telling yourself about why you can’t is often more powerful than the actual obstacle. Your narrative becomes your reality. Change the story, and you change what’s possible.

• Every successful person had the same obstacles. They just refused to use them as reasons to stop.

• The question isn’t whether you have constraints. It’s whether you’ll let them define you.
