You think you want no problems. You don’t. A life without problems is a life without meaning - nothing to solve, nothing to build, nothing to push against. The real question was never “how do I eliminate my problems?” It’s “which problems are worth having?” The entrepreneur trades a boring job for terrifying uncertainty. The athlete trades comfort for pain. They didn’t escape problems. They upgraded them. Stop trying to remove all difficulty from your life and start choosing difficulty that means something.

2 REFLECTIONS TO SIT WITH

• Every path has a price. You’re paying one right now, whether you chose it or not.

• The quality of your life is determined by the quality of your problems.

1. What problems am I currently living with by default rather than by choice?

We’re taught that winners never quit, that giving up is failure, that you should always push through. But not everything deserves your persistence. Some things are worth quitting - the job that’s hollowing you out, the path you chose to please someone else, the dream that was never really yours. Walking away from the wrong thing isn’t giving up. It’s making space. The courage to quit what doesn’t serve you is just as important as the courage to keep going when it does.

“I have to” is the lie you tell yourself to avoid responsibility.

You don’t have to stay in the job. You don’t have to maintain the relationship. You don’t have to keep living this way. You’re choosing to. Maybe because leaving feels scarier than staying. Maybe because the alternative seems worse. But it’s still a choice. When you say “I have no choice,” what you really mean is “I don’t like my options.” Own that. Every moment – including this one – is a choice. And pretending it isn’t is just another way of giving away your power.

“Someday” is the most dangerous word in your vocabulary.

Someday I’ll start the business. Someday I’ll write the book. Someday I’ll have that conversation. Someday I’ll travel, create, change, live differently. But someday never comes. It’s a placeholder for “never” that feels more comfortable to say. Time doesn’t wait. Life doesn’t pause. Every day you postpone is a day you’ll never get back. The question isn’t whether you’ll do it someday. The question is: if not now, when? And if not you, who?

• Tomorrow is guaranteed to no one.

• Later becomes never faster than you think.

There’s a quiet crisis in the art world, and almost no one is naming it.

Some of the most talented artists I know are also the most invisible.

If you’ve got a studio full of work you’re proud of, a following that’s slowly growing, and a few shows behind you — and still a nagging sense that the art world doesn’t quite know you exist — this letter is for you.

You’ve started hedging when people ask about your work.

Calling it “a hobby.” Downplaying it. Changing the subject.

Showing locally. Posting online. Waiting. Hoping the right person walks in.

Here’s what’s actually going on.

Your work is ready. Your presentation isn’t.

I’ve come to call it the Presentation Gap — the distance between how good your art is and how seriously the art world takes it. For most artists, that gap has nothing to do with talent.

I’d know. For 16 years I’ve run Fabrik Projects in Los Angeles, and I’ve been on the receiving end of thousands of artist submissions. I also published an art publication, called Fabrik, for 12 years in Los Angeles, and received hundreds of book submissions from artists. I can tell you exactly what makes a curator stop — and what gets set aside in three seconds.

It’s almost never the work.

It’s the packaging.

Your talent isn’t the problem. Your packaging is.

A professional art book closes that gap, because it changes the equation entirely.

Galleries take you seriously. Collectors read it as permission to invest. Curators see someone who treats their career like a professional, not a hopeful.

A book is the credential that does the talking before you ever walk in the room.

You’re not doing something unusual. You’re doing what they all did.

Here’s the part worth sitting with. The book isn’t the trophy you earn at the end of a career. For the artists who built something lasting, the book is the thing that built it.

Ed Ruscha wasn’t famous when he self-published Twentysix Gasoline Stations in 1963. He was twenty-six, a painter, and he printed 400 plain black-and-white copies and sold them for $3.50. Most didn’t sell. The Library of Congress refused to add it, on the grounds that it didn’t qualify as a book.

Today it’s considered the first modern artist book, and signed first editions have sold for as much as $60,000.

The book made the career. Not the other way around.

Alec Soth thinks in books, not shows. Sleeping by the Mississippi made his name in 2004 — as a book first, with the exhibitions coming after. He later started his own imprint, because he believes the book is the primary form, not the afterthought.

Martin Parr has made more than a hundred of them and co-wrote the definitive history of the form. Ask him what a book gives you that a wall or a screen can’t, and he points to something neither can offer: it lets you live with the work, take it in, soak it up — which is how a book creates a relationship. It’s tactile. It has a shape and a weight. A feed gives you one image at a time; a book gives you a sequence, and the sequence is the art.

Edward Burtynsky has reached more people through Oil, Water, and Anthropocene than a hundred gallery shows ever could. I exhibited opposite him at Photo London last week — and yes, his books were right there at the fair.

And this was never only a photographer’s move. Long before the photobook, painters and conceptual artists were treating the book as the work itself — Max Ernst built whole “collage novels” out of cut-up engravings in the 1930s; Dieter Roth reinvented what a book could even be in the 1960s, the same decade Ruscha did. David Hockney, a painter to his core, put sixty years of work into A Bigger Book and said of it: “I think my whole work is made for this.” Anselm Kiefer, who builds massive lead-bound book sculptures, calls the book “a symbol of learning, of transmitting knowledge.” The form belongs to any medium willing to claim it — paint, sculpture, collage, photography, anything.

The exhibition is temporary. The book is permanent.

The show comes down in six weeks. The book sits on shelves in libraries, in museums, in collectors’ homes for decades — still doing its work long after the gallery walls are repainted.

The path

So here’s how you make yours. Eight weeks. We work on your actual book together — this isn’t videos you watch alone and figure out by yourself.

Weeks 1–3 — Curate your story. We look at your entire body of work and choose the 30 to 40 images that belong in the book. Then we sequence them so they tell a coherent story about who you are.

Weeks 4–6 — Design and produce. Cover, layout, typography, color, printing logistics. You approve every decision. You end with print-ready files and a printing quote.

Weeks 7–8 — Launch and leverage. We build your gallery submission kit, design your launch, and map out exactly how to use the book to open doors with curators and collectors.

By the end, you don’t have notes and good intentions. You have a book.

The part most artists get wrong

The economics aren’t what you think.

The old model — pay $3,000 to print 50 copies, then spend months trying to sell them — is backwards.

A few years ago I worked with a sculptor named Richard on his book. Not a modest one — a 10-by-13-inch, 232-page coffee table book, paired with a limited-edition leather-bound box that held the book alongside a small bronze maquette of one of his sculptures. A collector’s piece.

Here’s the part that matters. The way we marketed that limited edition, the pre-sales alone covered the full cost of printing the book and producing all fifty boxes.

The book paid for itself before it shipped.

And that wasn’t the end of it. The visibility it created — the conversations it started, the rooms it reached — led directly to a commissioned sculpture project worth $250,000.

A quarter of a million dollars. From a book.

Not because the book was a sales brochure. It wasn’t. It was a permanent record of his work that put it in front of the right people, in the right format, at the right moment. One of them said yes to something far bigger than a book.

You’re waiting to have it all figured out. The perfect plan, the right strategy, the flawless execution. But while you’re polishing your approach, someone else with a messier plan is already building. Imperfect action generates feedback, momentum, and learning. Perfect inaction generates nothing. You don’t need the perfect first step. You need any first step. Start messy. Adjust as you go. The gap between where you are and where you want to be closes through doing, not planning.

Alec Soth thinks in books.

Not in series. Not in shows. Not in single images. In books.

He’s said it in interviews many times — that his way into a body of work is to imagine it as a book first, then make the work that will fill it, then sequence it, then publish it. The exhibition, if there is one, is a fragment of the book. Not the other way around.

It’s a quiet manifesto. Most photographers ignore it.

Soth’s first major book, Sleeping by the Mississippi, came out in 2004. He was thirty-five. He had been making the work for years — traveling along the river, photographing the people and places he found, slowly accumulating a body of pictures that didn’t yet have a shape.

The book gave it the shape.

Steidl published it. The print run sold out and was reprinted multiple times. That book made his career.

It made his career as a book. The exhibitions came after.

He followed it with Niagara in 2006. Broken Manual in 2010. Songbook in 2015. I Know How Furiously Your Heart Is Beating in 2019. Each one a self-contained body of work, conceived and resolved as a book.

In 2008, he founded his own publishing imprint, Little Brown Mushroom. He did it specifically because he believed the book was the primary form for photographic work, and he wanted to publish other artists’ books without asking anyone’s permission. Little Brown Mushroom has put out beautiful, strange, hand-made books for the last fifteen years.

Soth is a Magnum photographer. His work is in major museum collections. He could have spent his career making prints for galleries and treating the book as an afterthought.

He chose the book.

Here’s what I want you to notice about that choice.

A photograph on a wall lives there for the run of a show. Four weeks. Six weeks. Maybe eight weeks. Then it comes down. Maybe a collector buys it. Usually they don’t. The photograph goes into a flat file or a storage box. The show is over.

A photograph in a book lives there forever.

It sits in a curator’s library. In a museum bookstore. On a younger photographer’s shelf in Brooklyn or Berlin or Mexico City. In a research collection at a university. In the home of a collector who bought it ten years ago and still reaches for it.

The image gets seen by orders of magnitude more people than the gallery show ever reached. And it gets seen in sequence, with intention, surrounded by the other images that complete the argument.

The book is the medium. The exhibition is a fragment of it.

That’s Soth’s manifesto, and he built a career around it.

And while Soth is a photographer, the move he’s making isn’t a photographer’s move. Anselm Kiefer’s lead-bound book sculptures. Louise Bourgeois’s journals published as art objects. William Kentridge’s sketchbooks treated as parallel works to his films. David Hockney’s A Bigger Book. The book form belongs to any artist willing to claim it — across every medium.

Fear deals in hypotheticals. Action deals in reality.

Share The Intentional Artist

In 1963, Ed Ruscha published a book called Twentysix Gasoline Stations.

Forty-eight pages. Black-and-white photographs of twenty-six gas stations along Route 66, between his apartment in Los Angeles and his parents’ house in Oklahoma City. No essay. No foreword. No artist statement. The cover read, in his own deadpan typography, TWENTYSIX GASOLINE STATIONS.

He self-published. He printed 400 copies. He sold them for $3.50 each. Most went unsold.

The Library of Congress refused to add it to their collection. Their reasoning: it didn’t qualify as a book.

Ruscha was twenty-six years old. And he was a painter — already showing pop-influenced canvases in galleries, already pushing what painting could do with text and image. The book was a side project. A way of using photographs as flat material, the same way he used words as flat material in his paintings.

That book is now considered the first modern artist book. The move it made — treating the book itself as the work, not as documentation of the work — became the foundation for everything that followed. Sol LeWitt. Lawrence Weiner. Every conceptual artist of the seventies. Every photographer who built a career through the book form. The whole post-1960s history of artist publishing starts with that one cheaply printed paperback.

First editions of Twentysix Gasoline Stations now sell at auction for $1,500 to $6,000 depending on condition. Signed copies have sold for as much as $60,000.

Ruscha followed it with Various Small Fires. Every Building on the Sunset Strip. Thirtyfour Parking Lots. Real Estate Opportunities. Records. A Few Palm Trees. Nine Swimming Pools and a Broken Glass.

Each one cheaply printed. Each one conceptually airtight. Each one now a collector’s object.

He kept making them for forty years.

Here’s what I want you to notice about that story.

Ruscha was not famous in 1963. He was a young artist, still figuring out his work. He didn’t have a publisher. He didn’t have a gallery offering to produce a catalog. He didn’t have a curator writing his foreword. He didn’t have luxury paper, fine binding, or museum-grade reproduction.

He had an idea, twenty-six photographs, and the willingness to make the object.

The book made the career. Not the other way around.

That’s the part most artists get backwards. They believe the book is the trophy you earn after you’ve made it. Ruscha proved the opposite. The book is the thing that turns a group of images into a project — that says this is a body of work, with a beginning, an end, and an argument. Before the book, twenty-six gas station photographs were twenty-six photographs. After the book, they were a body of work that changed the course of contemporary art.

The book is what turns images into a project.

You don’t need to be famous to make your book. You don’t need a publisher. You don’t need premium production. You don’t need to be a photographer, either — Ruscha was a painter, and the book form belongs to every medium. Painters, sculptors, printmakers, ceramicists, conceptual artists. All of them.

You need an idea that holds together, a body of work that earns its sequence, and the willingness to make the object.

P.S. Ruscha printed 400 copies of Twentysix Gasoline Stations and most of them sat unsold for years. The ones that did sell ended up in the hands of people who recognized what they were holding. If your book ends up in five of the right hands, it will do more for your career than a year of trying to get into the right group show.

That’s Martin Parr.

He’s made over a hundred photobooks. He co-authored The Photobook: A History — the definitive survey of the form. He has spent his entire career arguing, quietly and prolifically, that the book is the medium most photographers underestimate.

I think about that quote a lot.

Parr’s argument is simple. The test of a photograph isn’t whether it can be hung on a wall. It’s whether it can hold a viewer’s attention on a page, in sequence, next to twenty or fifty or a hundred other images, with no curator and no museum lighting to do the work for it.

The book is the unforgiving test. And in his words: Don’t be lazy.

He’s not alone.

Ed Ruscha self-published Twentysix Gasoline Stations in 1963. Forty-eight pages, black-and-white photographs of gas stations along Route 66. No essay, no foreword, no commentary. He printed 400 copies and sold them for three dollars each. Most went unsold.

Alec Soth’s career was made by Sleeping by the Mississippi in 2004 — a book before it was a show. Niagara followed. Broken Manual. Songbook. He founded his own publishing imprint, Little Brown Mushroom, specifically because he believed the book was the primary form, not the secondary one. Soth has said in interviews that he thinks in books the way other photographers think in series.

Edward Burtynsky has spent thirty years photographing landscapes too vast to fit inside any gallery. Manufactured Landscapes. Oil. Water. Anthropocene. The book is how his work actually reaches its audience. A single Burtynsky book reaches more people than a hundred gallery shows. I know first-hand. I just exhibited opposite Edward Burtynsky at Photo London this past week. And, yes, his books were at the fair.

And it isn’t just photographers. David Hockney’s A Bigger Book. Anselm Kiefer’s massive lead-bound volumes — books that are themselves sculptures. William Kentridge’s notebooks treated as primary works. Louise Bourgeois’s published journals. Sol LeWitt’s wall drawings documented in book form. Yayoi Kusama’s monographs and autobiography. The list runs across every medium — painters, sculptors, conceptual artists, printmakers, ceramicists.

The pattern is the same for every artist who has built something lasting.

The exhibition is temporary. The book is permanent.

The show comes down in six weeks. The studio visit ends in an hour. The book sits on shelves in libraries, in museums, in collectors’ homes, in the studios of artists who haven’t been born yet. Twenty years from now, the photograph you spent six weeks installing in a gallery will be a memory. The book will still be doing its work.

Parr called it the ultimate statement. Ruscha proved it was a medium of its own. Soth built a career around it. Burtynsky reached a global audience through it. Hockney scaled it. Kiefer turned it into sculpture. Kentridge made it a parallel practice to his films.

What they all understood is the same thing.

If you want your work to last beyond the run of a single show, you have to put it between covers.

Every week, I talk to artists who are sitting on a book they haven’t made yet.

Not because the work isn’t there. Not because they don’t have enough of it. But because somewhere along the way, they convinced themselves they aren’t ready — that they need more shows, more reviews, more years, more something — before they put the work between covers.

Meanwhile, they have years of paintings, photographs, drawings, prints, sculptures. Bodies of work that collectors live with. That have hung in galleries. That audiences come back to. Work that is already doing what it needs to do.

The book they think they haven’t made yet?

It’s already there. It just doesn’t have a cover on it yet.

In this week’s Intentional Artist, I want to break down the two beliefs that keep more artists from making their book than anything else — and what’s actually true about each one.

The First Belief

Ask most artists why they haven’t made their book yet, and the first answer is almost always the same.

“I’m not ready.”

It’s the most common thing I hear, and it’s almost never true.

The artist saying it has usually been making the work for a decade or more. There are paintings in collectors’ homes. Photographs hanging in shows. Prints in flat files. Drawings stacked against the studio wall. A body of work that already exists — much of it already seen by people who care about it.

The work exists. What’s missing is the belief that it counts.

Here’s what’s actually happening. They’re measuring their work against some imaginary standard of what an artist-with-a-monograph looks like, and deciding they don’t qualify yet. But a book isn’t a trophy you earn after the career is done. It’s the thing that makes the career possible.

What’s actually true

Before you make a single new piece, go back through everything you’ve already made.

Your paintings. Your photographs. Your sketchbooks. Your contact sheets. The studio work you’ve never shown anyone.

These aren’t separate from your book. They are the book. Just not yet bound, sequenced, or shaped into something a stranger can hold.

Look for the images you keep coming back to. The subjects you can’t leave alone. The work that always gets the question — what is this about? The things you’ve been making slightly differently every time for ten years, because you haven’t quite found the way to say it cleanly. But the concept is always the same.

That’s your book right there.

The book-making process becomes a lot less daunting when you realize you’re not starting from zero. You’re selecting. Sequencing. Clarifying. You’re taking everything you’ve already made and giving it a spine — literally and otherwise.

The Second Belief

Once an artist starts to believe the work might actually be ready, the next thing they say is almost always the same too.

“I can’t afford to make a book.”

This one feels more real than the first, because it’s about money instead of feeling. And for a long time, it was true. A serious art monograph used to require a publisher or a vanity press — and the vanity press would quote you fifteen to thirty thousand dollars before they’d even talk to you about paper stock.

That world is gone. Almost no one outside the industry has noticed.

The artist saying “I can’t afford it” has usually, in the same year, spent more on framing for one solo show than a complete short-run book would cost. Or on a booth at an art fair. Or on a year of studio rent. The money is moving. It’s just not moving toward the asset that does the most for the career.

What’s actually true

The economics of art book printing have changed in the last decade. There’s now a real path at almost every budget — though the actual cost depends on size, page count, paper, binding, cover treatment, and run length. Any number I give you here is a range, not a quote.

Roughly speaking:

• Print-on-demand, through Blurb, WhiteWall, or one of a handful of similar services, runs about $30 to $60 per copy for a hardcover photo book, depending on size and pages. No minimum order. No inventory risk. The quality has come a long way — not yet Aperture-level, but real and respectable.

• Short-run offset — a properly designed hardcover monograph in a run of 200 to 300 copies — typically lands in the $5,000 to $12,000 range, total project, including design and production. The result is a real offset-printed book that holds its own on a gallery shop shelf.

• High-end offset — the Aperture, MACK, or Steidl tier, with heavier paper, deeper color, refined binding, and a run of 500 to 1,000 copies — runs $10,000 to $25,000 and up. This is museum-grade production.

The mid-tier book — five to twelve thousand dollars, designed and produced — is less than most artists spend in a single year on framing, art fair booth fees, or studio rent.

The money is moving. It’s just not moving toward the asset that does the most for the career.

And the book pays for itself. Two hundred copies sold through your gallery at $60 to $80 each is $12,000 to $16,000 in revenue. A signed limited edition of ten at $300 to $500 each adds another three to five thousand. Even at the modest end, a well-made book funds itself in the first year. Then it keeps doing its work for years.

A show comes down in six weeks. A studio visit ends in an hour. A book sits on a curator’s desk for years.

The question isn’t whether you can afford to make the book.

It’s whether you can afford to keep waiting.

The artists who end up with books on museum shelves aren’t necessarily the best at design or production. They’re the ones who got the right support at the right time.

Originality is misunderstood.

Most people talk about it like it arrives fully formed. A distinct voice. A unique style. A clean break from influence. You either have it or you don’t.

That story is flattering. It’s also false.

Originality is rarely the result of untouched genius. It’s the result of borrowed courage.

By that I mean: we become original when we finally permit ourselves to use what genuinely moves us, what genuinely obsesses us, what genuinely fits the way we see — even when it doesn’t look like the approved template for our field. Original work begins with permission, not invention.

This is true in almost every serious discipline.

In science, the breakthrough is often a method imported from somewhere else. A biologist borrows from statistics. A physicist borrows from philosophy. A computer scientist borrows from neuroscience. The novelty isn’t the discovery. It’s the willingness to notice that a tool from one room belongs in another.

Athletes do the same thing. The best ones don’t just repeat fundamentals. They study adjacent techniques, rethink recovery, adapt training for their body rather than the average body. At the highest level, improvement is personal before it’s public. It looks like deviation before it looks like mastery.

Craft works this way too. Chefs borrow from architecture. Musicians from filmmakers. Designers from choreographers. Writers from comedians. The interesting ones aren’t trying to be random. They’re trying to become more exact. They’re looking for the form that can carry their taste.

We are no different. But many of us get trapped in a more anxious myth.

The myth says that to be original, you have to avoid influence. So we get cautious. We hide our references. We flatten our interests. We try to sound like the kind of person who does this work.

That is how we become derivative while trying not to be.

Real originality is metabolized, not invented. You take in a lot. You live with it. You test it against your own standards. Over time, your taste starts making decisions faster than your insecurity can interrupt them.

That process is messier than the myth allows. It usually starts with visible borrowing.

A young writer imitates sentence rhythm. A photographer copies framing. A strategist borrows the sharpness of someone else’s argument. This isn’t failure. It’s apprenticeship.

The problem isn’t borrowing. The problem is stopping there.

At some point, the work has to pass through your actual life.

What have you noticed that others gloss over? What tensions do you keep returning to? What kinds of beauty do you trust? What forms feel honest, even if they’re less rewarded? What are you trying to protect in the work?

Those questions matter more than “How do I stand out?”

Standing out is a side effect. Recognition is downstream. Originality is what happens when your influences stop being costumes and start becoming building materials.

This is also why cross-domain learning matters.

If you only study your own field, you inherit its default anxieties along with its techniques. You learn what’s fashionable, what’s legible, what gets praised. That can make you competent. It can also make you timid.

Other fields reveal alternative standards.

Carpentry teaches respect for joints — the invisible structural decisions that hold a piece together. Medicine teaches triage — not every problem deserves the same level of intervention. Distance running teaches that consistency beats emotional intensity. Jazz teaches that discipline and improvisation are not opposites; one makes the other possible. Ecology teaches that healthy systems are diverse, adaptive, resistant to monoculture.

These lessons are practical, not decorative.

A writer who learns from runners stops waiting for inspiration and builds a repeatable pace. A designer who learns from ecology stops over-optimizing for one platform, one audience, one trend. An artist who learns from carpentry pays more attention to composition, sequence, load-bearing decisions — instead of surface flair. A founder who learns from jazz stops over-scripting every move and becomes more responsive inside a strong structure.

This is also why sustainable visibility is hard for those who chase only format and tactics. If your whole model is built on keeping up, your work becomes externally paced. You become highly responsive and internally hollow. You may stay visible for a while. You become less and less recognizable to yourself.

Sustainability requires a different approach.

It requires building from durable questions instead of temporary incentives.

What do I return to even when no one asks for it? What kind of contribution am I actually trying to make? What cadence keeps me sharp without making me resent the work? What material is rich enough that I can revisit it across seasons?

These aren’t branding questions. They’re practice questions. And practice is where identity becomes real.

Many of us secretly hope identity will arrive before practice. First certainty, then output. But identity forms the other way around. Through repetition, refusal, revision, and accumulation, you become easier to recognize — to yourself first, then to others.

That’s why self-trust matters more than self-expression.

Self-expression is often treated as the goal. But expression without trust quickly becomes performance. You start explaining yourself instead of building. You start signaling taste instead of exercising it. You start choosing what looks like you over what is actually true.

Self-trust is quieter. It lets you keep a strange idea long enough to test it. It lets you discard competent work that’s misaligned. It lets you borrow boldly without feeling contaminated by influence. It lets you make fewer, better decisions.

And self-trust can be trained. Not by affirmations. By evidence.

You keep promises to yourself. You finish things. You develop criteria. You revise with precision instead of self-contempt. You learn the difference between discomfort that means growth and discomfort that means drift.

Over time, this builds a sturdier creative identity than any public positioning exercise can.

The contrarian truth: originality is less about being different and more about being integrated.

Integrated people make more distinctive work because they’re less divided. They aren’t constantly cutting themselves apart to fit the expectations of a niche, a market, or a scene. They have enough range to pull from multiple domains and enough discipline to make those influences cohere.

That coherence is what people experience as voice.

Not novelty for its own sake. Not eccentricity. Not chaos. Voice is what happens when judgment becomes stable. When your choices begin belonging to each other. When someone can feel that the work could only have been made by a person who sees in that particular way.

This takes longer than people want.

It’s slower than trend participation. Slower than mimicry. Slower than optimizing for immediate recognition.

But it ages better.

You stop trying to be seen and start trying to become legible through repeated honest work.

So if you’re worried that you’re too influenced, too late, too undefined, too cross-disciplinary to count — good. That probably means you’re close to making something real.

Let yourself borrow. Let yourself study. Let yourself admire. But don’t stop at admiration. Carry what you love into contact with your own standards, obsessions, constraints, and questions. Make it answer to your life.

That’s where originality starts.

Not in purity.

In permission.

You know the drill.

You open Instagram, and within three minutes you’ve looked at six artists in your medium, four musicians in your genre, two filmmakers who got into the festival you didn’t, and a photographer whose client list makes you want to close your laptop and never pitch again.

You tell yourself it’s research. You tell yourself you’re staying current. You tell yourself you need to know what’s working.

But what actually happens is this: you start making work that looks like theirs. You start posting the way they post. You start writing your bio the way they wrote theirs. You start pricing the way you think they price. You start pitching the galleries they pitch, using language that sounds like their language.

And slowly — without realizing it — you disappear.

Not because you stopped creating. But because you stopped being you.

The trap is the same across every discipline.

If you’re a visual artist, you scroll other artists’ feeds and start second-guessing your palette, your scale, your subject matter. You see someone land a gallery show and you start reverse-engineering their aesthetic instead of pushing deeper into your own. You write an artist statement that sounds like theirs because theirs seemed to work. Six months later, a curator scrolls your page and sees... nothing memorable. Because you look like everyone else who was also copying that same artist.

If you’re a musician, you study the artists who got the Spotify editorial placement or the sync deal. You start tweaking your sound to fit what seems to be landing — slightly more ambient, a little more lo-fi, whatever the algorithm is rewarding this month. You write a press kit that sounds like every other indie artist’s press kit because you modeled it off theirs. A music supervisor listens to your track and skips it in three seconds. Not because it’s bad. Because it sounds like everything else in their inbox.

If you’re a filmmaker, you watch the shorts that got into Sundance and start framing your next project around what worked for them — the pacing, the tone, the subject matter. You write a director’s statement that echoes theirs. You build your deck around their visual language. A programmer reads your submission and it feels... familiar. Not in a good way. In a “I’ve seen this before” way.

If you’re a photographer, you scroll through the feeds of the photographers getting the gallery shows and the festival selections. You start adjusting your work — same muted tones, same large-format compositions, same conceptual framing that feels vaguely like theirs. You submit to the same open call with a project statement that could have been written by any of the twenty photographers they reviewed that day. A curator flips through your portfolio and moves on. Not because the work is weak. Because it doesn’t feel like it belongs to anyone in particular.

The pattern is identical no matter what you make. You optimize around your peers. And whatever group you optimize around is the group you start to look like.

Here’s what nobody tells you.

They’re looking at the people who buy.

The gallerist. The curator. The music supervisor. The art director. The festival programmer. The collector. The brand manager. The publisher.

These are the people whose attention actually matters. And what they respond to is fundamentally different from what impresses your peers.

Your peers are impressed by aesthetic. The buyer is impressed by clarity. Clarity about what you do, who it’s for, why it matters, and what makes it different from the other 200 submissions in their inbox this month.

A gallerist doesn’t pick the artist with the best Instagram grid. They’re looking for the work that stops them — something they haven’t seen before, something that makes them feel like they discovered it first. Every gallerist wants to be the one who found the next Basquiat, the next Kara Walker, the next Wolfgang Tillmans. They want a voice that’s unmistakably its own. And when a pitch email lands in their inbox and tells them, clearly and confidently, why this work exists and why it belongs in their program — that’s what gets a reply. Not a beautiful grid. A clear voice.

A music supervisor doesn’t pick the track that sounds most like what’s trending. They’re trying to solve a problem — a specific scene needs a specific feeling, and they’re scrolling through hundreds of submissions looking for the one that gives them chills. The artist who sounds like a slightly different version of what’s already charting gets skipped. The one with a sound they can’t quite place? That’s the one they send to the director.

A festival programmer doesn’t pick the short film that looks like last year’s Palme d’Or winner. They’ve watched 3,000 submissions. They’re tired. They’re looking for the filmmaker who made them forget they were watching a screener — the one with a perspective so specific it couldn’t have come from anyone else. The films that feel like they were made to fit a festival’s taste get rejected. The ones that feel like they had to be made get programmed.

A publisher doesn’t pick the manuscript that reads like a polished version of what’s already on the shelf. They’re looking for the writer whose voice they can hear after one page — the one who makes them think, “I haven’t read anything like this.” The proposal that mirrors the bestseller list gets a pass. The one that carves out its own space gets a meeting.

The pattern is the same everywhere. The people making decisions aren’t looking for the next version of what already exists. They’re looking for something they haven’t seen yet. And you’ll never become that by studying what everyone else is doing.

The practical shift.

This isn’t about ignoring your industry entirely. It’s about changing where you get your direction from.

Instead of scrolling other artists’ feeds and asking “what are they doing that I should be doing?”, try asking a different set of questions:

What does the person on the other side of my pitch actually need to see? A gallerist needs to know your work fits their program. A music supervisor needs to hear a track that solves a specific brief. A brand needs to see that your photography matches their visual identity. An editor needs to know your manuscript fills a gap in their list. Start there — not with what other creatives are posting.

What does a great submission in my field actually look like? Not from the creator’s perspective — from the reviewer’s. Talk to a gallerist about what makes them stop scrolling. Ask a music supervisor what makes a pitch stand out. Read interviews with festival programmers about what they look for. The answers will surprise you, because they’re almost never about the work itself. They’re about the communication around the work.

What am I doing that nobody else in my space is doing? This is your actual advantage, and you’ll never find it by looking at competitors. You find it by looking inward — at your background, your perspective, your combination of influences, your specific way of seeing. The musician who used to be an architect. The painter who spent a decade in finance. The filmmaker who grew up on a cattle ranch. Those aren’t quirks to hide. They’re the things that make your work — and your pitch — unforgettable.

The hardest part.

The hardest part of this isn’t the strategy. It’s the discipline.

Because scrolling your peers feels productive. It feels like you’re learning. It feels like due diligence.

But it’s actually procrastination dressed up as research. And it’s slowly making you less distinctive, less confident, and less likely to make the work that only you can make.

The next time you open Instagram and start drifting toward the feeds of people who do what you do, close the app. Open your email instead. Send one pitch. Write one statement. Follow up with one contact.

That’s the work that actually moves your career forward. Not watching someone else move theirs.
